Spray foam (spray polyurethane) insulation is an excellent product for many energy efficiency projects in new and existing homes across the Columbus area. At Greene Solutions, we use high density, closed cell spray foam insulation.
Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation
Closed cell spray foam cures to a hard, rigid material.
Closed cell spray foam has a higher thermal resistance than open cell, at about R-7 per inch.
Closed cell spray foam creates an excellent air barrier, to offer the additional benefits of air sealing.
Closed cell spray foam insulation needs to be applied by a trained installer with a sprayer that mixes two liquids. The foam expands to fill cavities and cover surfaces completely, and it can be used to insulate in walls, attics, ceilings, floors, and basements and crawlspaces in cold climates like Ohio’s.
Use a Qualified Installer For Spray Foam Insulation Projects
Insulating with spray foam requires a qualified installer, making it a more expensive solution than other insulation materials. Some spray foams, however, can have much higher insulation levels per inch (making them good for tight or narrow spaces). In some cases, they can act as a vapor barrier and as an air barrier.
Spray foam insulation provides a combined solution to insulation and air sealing with one product. It works as an air barrier by sticking like glue to the surfaces it touches. This means that when spray foam is installed in an attic, for example, all of the existing attic insulation needs to be removed from the attic floor so that the foam can do its sticky job properly. Traditional forms of insulation do not provide any barrier to the flow of air, requiring more material and labor costs to reduce air leakage. The value of these properties to your home comfort can outweigh the additional upfront costs.
